Why Lemma?

There is no real AI learning tool on the market. Everything out there is a gimmick — an AI zoo where you pay to watch the baboons. They generate piles of slop with AI, then market it at full volume.

Every product today is a hollow shell whose ceiling is chained to the release cycle of a foundation model — and the ceiling is low. They announce, "as it turns out, AI can teach better than a human teacher," planting the conclusion before you've had a chance to think, and then serve the generation engine's output and call it a "course."

Let's get one thing straight first. How did the "AI + learning" market come to be? Is it a sustaining innovation — or a creative, disruptive one, like the leap from horse and carriage to the Ford? When ChatGPT arrived in late 2022, people said it would transform education. Almost four years later, why is there still no tidal wave of a product?

Zoom out, and the answer is infrastructure. A product can only exist when the ground beneath it is ready — and ours is no different. We had to wait until frontier-model capability and the cost of compute crossed a certain threshold. That time has come, and recent research has pointed us in a new direction: AI is the means, not the end. Other tools are just a layer of paint over a chatbot. We are building, under an AI-native design philosophy, learning outcomes that are genuinely world-class.

About the two of us. Ceaser Zhao and I met in person for the first time at the Hangzhou marathon, and we clicked immediately. Not over shared hobbies — over shared mental models, shared experience, shared values. We walked the corridors talking about our lives: the hardest stretches, the choices we made. My partner believes we do all of this because we have no way back. I know that's wrong. We do it because it is what we have always wanted — even though it hurts right now.

I cannot put my hope in fate, or in Spotify. Hazy sweater weather pulls you under; a Goo Goo Dolls strum cuts through every wall I have built. It brings back afternoons in the valley imagining the future with friends, or walking alone down an autumn street. But when the music stops, everything snaps back. We have to act.

So I joined Lemma, as if something were calling. I love this project — Lemma is the first brick of what will one day be a much larger empire. We will not look back. I am writing this with the music turned all the way up and a drink in hand, to numb the overcritical circuits in my head — because I have learned, too many times, that when my passion cools, every drop of ink goes cold with it.

People assign AI a supreme meaning and place every hope of solving the world's problems upon it. Society is drunk on messianism — longing for a savior, or for an excuse to settle for what is. The generations before us built the era we live in. It is not a beautiful world, and they stopped contributing — they left us to clean up the mess.

Perhaps many developers were stirred the same way — by ideals, and by the pressure of reality alike.

Technology is not held hostage by politicians arguing over air-conditioning policy. It advances fast in relatively closed environments, and at times it is barely constrained by scarce resources at all. With AI, the curse of scarce resources can, in some moments, actually be lifted.

Back to where we started. "AI education" is a vast ocean. We are not fighting on the surface of the red sea — we are building a submarine for the Mariana Trench. We will change how education works, and then we will redefine it. And remember: this is only the appetizer.
